Last week saw a major step forward in observation by ACTRIS-Switzerland: a radar dedicated to the remote sensing of clouds in the atmosphere was installed by the University of Bern at the National Facility in Payerne, hosted by MeteoSwiss. This instrument of utmost importance will profile cloud structure with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Able to measure the vertical velocity of hydrometeors, like water droplets or snowflakes, the so-called microwave Doppler cloud radar will allow diagnosis of cloud types. It joins and complements the fleet of other remote sensing instruments in Payerne, opening unique opportunities of study and research on hydrometers and aerosols present in the atmosphere.
